Paul A. Serbinowski, Esq. has practiced as an attorney for over 25 years and is licensed to practice law in the states of North Carolina, New York and Ohio. Paul is registered before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a U.S. patent attorney, which requires both legal and science training and education. Paul represents clients in U.S. utility patent applications (provisional and non-provisional), PCT application drafting and filing, U.S. design patent applications and U.S. trademark applications.
Paul started his career as a patent agent at an international patent law firm in Washington, DC. Paul's peers have recognized his people skills and legal skills. He has become a partner at four law firms. Paul is the Member and Owner of Serbinowski PLLC, His clients include sole inventors, universities and large and small companies in various states in the U.S. and in foreign countries. Over the years he has had the privilege of working with hundreds of inventors, patent examiners, business people, U.S. and foreign lawyers, corporate executives and business owners. He has a laser focus on getting the best results he can at a reasonable cost. His clients have included a number of Fortune 500 companies and universities.
Paul has obtained hundreds of patents for a wide range of subject matter including the life sciences (anti-cancer drugs, stem cells, nucleic acid compositions, antimicrobial polypeptides, probiotics for dogs, cows, pigs, chickens and fish, bacterial compositions, DNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for breeding disease resistant Atlantic salmon, SEM imaging method for analyzing DNA, engineered polypeptide cassettes for use with CAR T-cells); pharmaceuticals; medical devices; electrical materials, liquid crystal displays, lighting (LEDs and fluorescent); solar cells; high performance metal alloys; corrodible downhole articles; organic chemistry (e.g., catalysts for polymer synthesis, fermentation systems for making chemicals and for alternative energy); metal oxide washcoats for catalytic converters; metallurgy; for aerospace and race cars; semiconductors, oil and gas, and mechanical inventions (e.g., valves, pumps for molten metal and vacuum pumps). Paul applies his experience to help you obtain valuable patent protection for your inventions.
He also provides opinions about whether your patent is being infringed by others, whether you infringe another's patent, and whether a patent of interest might be considered invalid.
Paul has successfully represented clients before the Patent, Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Paul has substantial experience drafting licenses concerning intellectual property. He has also prepared many opinions regarding noninfringement, invalidity, patentability and right to use. He carries out due diligence investigations and patent searching. Paul and his legal assistant, Jenni, have smoothly onboarded major patent and trademark portfolios of companies. Paul has managed these portfolios and Jenni and Paul have handled all docketing of these matters. The firm has a robust international electronic document file management system, subject matter conflict checking procedures and docketing system.
Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning

Residential Real Estate
The firm also provides legal services concerning some aspects of residential real estate in North Carolina and handles leases, deeds, contracts, opinions regarding property disputes and landlord-tenant disputes.

Documents drafted by the Firm as well as outside documents are notarized. Currently only in person notarizing but stay tuned for remote electronic notarization.
Patent searching: patentability, infringement/noninfringement, invalidity, state of the art, freedom to operate. Technology areas of searching include small molecule pharmaceuticals, biologics, organic/inorganic chemistry, materials science, electromechanical, electrooptical and mechanical.
